Sexy Grand Theft Auto romance triggers in-real-life ‘cheating’ scandals: ‘No way is my fiancé playing this’

Posted on September 7, 2026

A relationship mechanic in Rockstar’s upcoming “Grand Theft Auto VI” has ignited an unexpected online debate over whether playing the game constitutes infidelity, after an extended gameplay preview released Aug. 27 detailed a romance system between the game’s two protagonists, Jason and Lucia.

The system lets players build a relationship with Lucia through dates, text conversations and shared activities, and she reacts negatively if ignored, according to Gulf News. What started as a handful of TikTok videos has grown into what the outlet described as one of the year’s more unusual gaming controversies, eventually drawing in Rockstar itself, the broader player base, and at least one real-life engaged couple who publicly disagreed over the issue.

TikTok creator Shelby Haas was among the first to frame the mechanic as a relationship risk, telling her followers, “Don’t let your boyfriend or fiancé or husband play GTA 6,” arguing that maintaining an in-game relationship with a virtual character crosses a line. Her fiancé, Alex Eubank, responded in his own video, saying he wanted to play the game but would defer to her concerns: “Do I want to play GTA VI? Of course I want to, but if it bothers my woman, I won’t be playing.” Other creators have gone further, directly labeling the gameplay as a form of cheating, according to Toy People

.

The backlash has drawn pushback from other players, many of whom noted that “The Sims” has let players date, marry and raise virtual families for years without similar accusations of infidelity, according to Toy People. Others on social media have dismissed the controversy as manufactured outrage, questioning how widespread the sentiment genuinely is.

Rockstar has confirmed that the romantic content is entirely optional. Rob Nelson, co-head of studio at Rockstar North, said Jason and Lucia will continue to function as criminal partners in the game’s core story even if players skip the relationship-building activities altogether, according to Toy People. Whether players can actively trigger sexual content within the relationship system has not been confirmed by the studio.

“Grand Theft Auto VI” is Rockstar’s most anticipated release in over a decade, following 2013’s “Grand Theft Auto V.”
